DJ legends, Grandmaster Flash and Pete Tong were on hand to impart their wisdom and skills upon the youth of the DJ world in the Gatecrasher Arena. One of the highlights of the show had to be the judging of the prestigious DJ Mag Tech Awards. Companies competing for the highest tech honours included Numark, Pioneer, Serato, Stanton, Vestax and of course Toronto, Canada based, SmithsonMartin Inc. SmithsonMartin’s first product Emulator was up against some fierce competition with the Stanton SCS.4 and the Pioneer DJM-T1, but no one could deny that the most innovative product of the year was the first of a kind, “Star Trek Like” multi-touch DJ system, Emulator.

Alan Smithson receiving the award from DJ Mag Tech Editor, Mick Wilson

“We are so proud to be recognized by our peers as the most innovative product of 2011. Companies that win Tech Awards typically go on to do great things and we are so excited about the future of touch screen DJ’ing.” said SmithsonMartin CEO, Alan Smithson “I am thrilled to announce that we will be releasing the Modular version of Emulator where users can fully customize their touch screen DJ experience for any midi software”. Introduced to the public in March 2011, Emulator has made waves all over the world being seen on some of the largest music programs around the world including the German Chart Show, several music videos and the Romanian Music Awards. “I´m definitely overwhelmed by the EMULATOR! People now can see what I´m doing, and it´s incredibly fast, all the buttons I need for my set are on one screen straight under my hands – I am addicted.” said Jay Frog, producer formerly of Scooter “Emulator is the only product in the history of DJ’ing that unites the DJ with the crowd visually. The union of music, visuals and the work of the DJ become one unlike anything else that has ever existed before.” Said Emulator creator, Pablo Martin “We have been working around the clock to deliver the most accurate, flexible midi controller ever made.”

The addition of solid state drives (SSD) to modern PCs has dramatically decreased the time it takes for a PC to boot, and aside from an inexpensive RAM upgrade, perhaps, it’s the single easiest thing you can do to improve the performance on an existing PC. But this week, Microsoft explained how its working to improve the boot time of Windows 8, and if what we’re seeing is to be believed, it looks like this process is about to get a lot quicker for everyone.

According to yet another long winded post on the Building Windows 8 blog, Windows 8 will include a new “fast startup mode” that will dramatically improve the Windows startup time, and that’s true whether you’re using an SSD drive or not.

How fast? An accompanying video shows Windows 8 booting from a cold start in just 10 seconds. And it’s not exactly a Macbook Air

Harmor – featuring a unique and modern additive synthesis engine that emulates classic subtractive synthesis as well, taking sound generation to the next level.
Additive / subtractive emulation – generating sounds not possible with traditional synthesis methods, including the ability to draw custom filter shapes, and offering precise control over every aspect of the sound conception.
Image & Audio Resynthesis – allowing a faithful, sampler-quality resynthesis of audio, not a vague sound-alike often met in additive synthesizers. Images too can be imported and turned into sound.
Envelopes and articulation – as originally seen in Image-Line’s flagship synthesizer Sytrus, are taken to new levels of features, flexibility and GUI integration.
Sound creation – possibilities are endless, but not bewildering. Stutter, mangle, stretch, pitch and manipulate both audio and images beyond recognition.

The older Monotouchlive is now discontinued and the new software born is called EMULATOR.
The first version i plan to launch very soon, include control for traktor on internal mode; the other interfaces are under development (traktor external ableton etc etc)

This software is designed to work with tablet PCs, the model i suggest for use with my software is the wonderful HP TM2, or the older model TM2Z. It also can be used with lenovo multitouch tablet and DELL XT tablet. All these tablets support multitouch, have capacitive digitizers, but again i suggest the HP TM2, due to it having a wonderful capacitive digitizer from WACOM; it’s really good quality tablet.
The CPU power of TM2 is perfect to run Traktor; I tested with Ableton without any troubles. Some guys think the CPU on HP TM2 doesn’t have enough power, but that is wrong.

The major problem with present touchscreen controllers is that you don’t have tactile feedback (you can’t feel with your fingers knobs, buttons, sliders etc etc), for that reason you need put your eyes all time on the touchscreen device for use the controller, and lose the focus over music software.

Emulator is a software where you have all what you need on same screen and combine the power of multitouch, the useful standard mouse and the native interface of software to be controlled all in one nice and useful GUI.

This software runs under windows 7; the first version I plan to launch only works on tablet PCs with 12.1 inch screen (1280×800). I decided to do this because the big LCD multitouch screens available on the market aren’t really accurate and enough for pro usage; [optical sensors can] generate false touch, ghost touches, etc. and you lose portability [on larger screens].

More info soon.
Stay tuned!
